Most of my songs are intended to be everyman songs, and I usually have 2 or more people or experiences that I am writing about. But this song was written about just one, a childhood friend of my sister who lived across the street. I don’t think the real Mary Jo ever heard this song.
Fun Fact #9
Terri Nunn who sang the Top Gun song, “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin was in Paisley recording some stuff with David Z. She graciously agreed to sing with me on this song (she sang the melody an octave higher) and it was beautiful. Whatever label she was with at the time did not give us permission to use her voice, but if I ever find the tape , I could contact her again since she may be on a different label. She was so cool, she taught me a little trick about recording, since her voice was so clear, she asked if I wanted her to sing the word Mary with a hard R or with a soft w, because I was already singing Mary with a hard R. I didn’t know what she meant so she showed me both ways, and her singing mawee Jo was way cooler, she knocked it out of the ballpark. Thanks Terri!
lyrics
It’s not good to compromise your beliefs to live his lies. It’s easy to forget yourself when you’re caught in someone else. She got taken by surprise. She got looking in his eyes. Now she just can’t walk away. There’s not that much that I could say to Mary Jo.
